The visit of Thathagata

Having worshipped the budhdha,I will recite the Great chronicle.What the ancients wrote is long drawn our in places,condensed in places has many repetitions.I have made the chronicle free from fault,easy to understand and remember,while arousing serene joy and emotion.

Having obtained permission from the previous Budhdhas,Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment at the foot of the bodhi tree at uruwela (in both which is also knows as Budhdhagaya , in the district of gaya,Bihar,India) on the vaisakha (Vesak) full moon day.After seven weeks,during which time he experienced the utmost bliss,he went to m Baranasi(Benares) and preached to the peaople ,who then embraced Buddhism.In the ninth month after the attainment of Buddhahood he visited sri lanka,to purify it.As lanka was known to the Budhdha as the place where his doctrine would shine,he thought  that the yakkhas (who were then inhabitants of lanka) must be driven from Lanka.At the time,the yakkhas were  gathered at Mahanga garden(near Mahiyangana) on the banks of the river Ganga (river Mahaveli).Hovering above their heads ,he struck terror on them in the form rain,stormand darkness.He then spread hus rug,sat down,made the rug have a burning edge and expanded it.The yakkhas who were at the periphery were terrified.He then brought down Giridipa,the highlands of lanka,placed the yakkhas on it and sent it back.

To the Devas assembled there,the Buddha preached the Dhamma and crores of them embaraced Buddhism.The lord of the devas,Mahasumana of Sumanakuta mountain (Adam"s peak),asked the Buddha for an object of worship.The Buddha gave him a lock of his hair,which was placed in a golden cssket and a Thupa was built enshrinin it (Mahiyangana dagaba).The buddha then departed to uruwela (in india).

Subsequently,after the passing away of the Buddha his collar-bone relic too,was enshrined in the same dagaba by King Devanampuyatissa's brother.prince Udhdhachulabaya,and King Dutugemumu reconstructed the dagaba and made it taller during his reign.

In the fifth year of the Buddhahood the Buddha came to Nagadipa In sri lanka to settle a war which was about to take place to betwwen to Naga kings.Mahodara and Chulodara (Uncle and nephew)over the ownership of a gem-set throne He preached to the Naga king and settled the quarrel without war.Tge naga king of kalaniya (kelaniya),by the name of Maniakkika,who had come to take part in the war,Invited the Buddha to kalaniya,in the eighth year of Buddhahood he came to lanka again and visited kalyani with five hundred othe monks.Here(at the site of present Kekani dagaba),he preached to the Naga King and his followers.

During this visir,he also went to (a) Sumanakuta (Adam's peak)  (b) Digavapi(probably near the kandiya-kuttu tankin the Eastern province,thirty miles from Batticaloa) (c) the present site of Mahamegavana(Anuradhapura).
